Do you need to be concerned about Liability?
Lawsuits are the result of someone being harmed, either with bodily injury or damage to their property. Any organization has liability exposures, and can be named in a legal action due to the negligent actions of a volunteer or member causing harm to a third party. Your major concern as a small not-for-profit group is to have the resources in place to defend such actions, so that the organization is not destroyed by such actions.
You can be held liable for:
- Injuries or harm to participants in outings or events, or third party property
- Injury or harm to volunteers or employees
- Official actions taken or not taken by your organization.
While managing liability exposures should be a concern, the good news is that though a combination of a risk management program and insurance coverage you can protect yourself from most liability issues.
